Sue Lowe

Sue Lowe - collagraph and monoprint printmaker based in North West Somerset.

Sue graduated in fine art in 2004, following an earlier career in Civil Service management and policy development. She embarked on a printmaking practice, exhibiting in galleries, group exhibitions and art fairs in London and the South East. Practice was combined with teaching in adult education and employment in arts/education administration.

Sue returned to Somerset (where she was born and grew up) in 2011. She was a director of Contains Art CIC, Watchet from 2012 to 2019. In 2021, with Sarah Ward, Sue founded Albatross Print Studio which is now managed by Onion Collective CIC as East Quay Print Studio.

Process
I am interestesd in lines, layers and patterns created by the action of nature, be that formation and erosion of rocky surfaces or organic growth and decay. My work is landscape-based but often develops from details or collected materials, rather than a panoramic viewpoint.Collagraph is the main technical strand of my printmaking practice. It lends itself to representations of surface textures that interest me. I create textured plates with different glues, paints and plaster. Often organic material - leaf skeletons, root structures, seaweeds - are used in plate construction, or casts from rock and fossilised surfaces, making direct connections with nature in the work. My collagraphs are often printed from multiple plates, with elements of chine collé to create layers.Recently I have been investigating approaches to monotype printing. In these prints imagery develops intuitively, with several passes though the press, using stencils to build up layers in an additive process. Relief impressions offset from old collagraph plates add textural detail. Each piece is unique. I don’t begin with a fixed idea of the composition, so the pieces grow in different directions.
